Project Overview

Kenya Seed Company is a leading provider of high-quality seeds, including maize, sorghum, and wheat, serving farmers across the country. Their existing website lacked a user-friendly interface, making it difficult for farmers and stakeholders to access product information and essential resources.

Primary User Groups:

    1. Small Business Owners: Entrepreneurs seeking a simplified and efficient solution for managing daily cash transactions.
    2. Local Retailers: Businesses engaged in local commerce relying on mobile money transactions for payments.
    3. Freelancers and Service Providers: Individuals offering services and looking for an organized way to track income and expenses

The Problem

The company needed a modern website that: Improved accessibility to product details and farming resources. Enhanced user navigation for different customer segments (small-scale and large-scale farmers, distributors, etc.). Made it easier for farmers to find and purchase seeds.

My Role

I was responsible for the UX/UI design and development of the website, focusing on usability, responsiveness, and aesthetics.

Design Process

Step 1: Research & User Needs

  • Conducted competitor analysis of other seed companies.
  • Gathered insights from farmers on their challenges in accessing seed information online.
  • Identified key UX pain points on the old website.

Step 2: Wireframing & Prototyping

  • Created low-fidelity wireframes to map out the website structure.
  • Developed high-fidelity prototypes in Figma to visualize the final UI.

Step 3: UI/UX Enhancements

  • Designed a clean, responsive interface optimized for both desktop and mobile.
  • Simplified navigation with clear product categories.
  • Added a search functionality for users to find specific seed varieties quickly.

Step 4: Development & Testing

  • Developed the website with a focus on fast loading speeds and accessibility.
  • Conducted user testing with a sample of farmers to refine the experience.

The Solution

The redesigned website provided:

  • Better Navigation: A more intuitive menu and categorization for easy access to information.
  • Mobile Optimization: Ensured a seamless experience for users on smartphones.
  • Informative Product Pages: Detailed descriptions, benefits, and usage guidelines for each seed type.
  • Farmer Resources Section: Guides and best practices for farming various crops.

Impact & Results

After launch, the company experienced:

  • Increased engagement, with more users browsing seed categories.
  • Improved inquiries, as farmers could easily find contact details and product info.
  • Better mobile experience, making it accessible for farmers in rural areas.

Lessons Learned

  1. Importance of user research in designing for specific audiences (farmers).
  2. The need for clear, concise information in agricultural websites.
  3. How mobile-first design improves accessibility for rural users.
